Antique Beds, Iron, Iron with Brass
A Collection
We have a collection of antique beds, iron and iron with brass. Most of our beds were discovered in Vermont. We are ex-Vermonters who brought a truck load of antique beds out with us to San Diego twenty years ago and have been selling antique iron and brass beds out of our garage ever since. Most of our beds come from the rural Northeast.
When the New York World's Fair displayed Queeen Victoria's iron and brass bed the trend had begun. Iron and iron with brass beds were manufactured in the U.S. from 1830-1917. World War I made the iron too valuable to use in beds.
These beds are truly pieces of American history and heirlooms. They have survived all these years because of the strength of the hand poured cast iron. They truly are works of art.
Some of the beds have been restored, some are in original condition. Your preference. In a restoration the 19th century paint is completely removed, the bed is primed and painted in the color and finish you choose. The brass is polished to it's original shine. If the bed is for a young child I recommend that the 19th century paint be completely removed because it may contain lead.
Prices range from $295 to $2000. Displayed here the rose arbor bed is $895, the child's canopy bed is $695, the ornate twin is $495, the linear twin is $595, the collapsible child's bed is $895, the Queen is $1495, the black full is $995, and the sandblasted queen is $1295. Antique beds came in a wide variey of sizes. There were no standards in the 19th century as there are today. Sizes range from 30 inch twins to 54 inch fulls. There is no such thing as an antique queen. However I can make an antique full accommodate a modern queen mattress by altering the rails and adding slats. The bed itself is not altered. Some of our clients choose to have a custom mattresss made here in Escondido to match the size of a non-standard sized antique bed.
Our collection can be viewed in Escondido, north San Diego County. At present we have about 25 complete beds ready to choose from. We work by appointment. E-mail me or call (760) 741-1058 for an appoinment and directions.
